Linda Powell: Colorado Hairstreak Butterfly Even when the Rocky Mountain foothills are shrouded in storm clouds, the colorful Colorado Hairstreak will not fly for cover. A spot of jewel-like iridescence against a gray sky, the plucky creature continues on his way oblivious to the weather. The Colorado Hairstreak has even been known to fly through the foothills after sunset, fluttering here and there amid the oak trees. These small trees, or Gambel Oak, as they are also known, are the home of regally-hued Colorado Hairstreak butterflies. The Colorado Hairstreak lays her eggs on the Gambel Oak's bark. Later, the Hairstreak caterpillars feast on its leaves and the beautiful adult butterflies linger amid its branches as if they recall the importance the tree held to their earlier life. When bright sunlight hits their wings, the butterflies stand out from the branches like amethysts in a crown. The creatures bear deep purple wings edged in black with golden-orange spots. They are regarded as one of America's most exotic butterfly species for their brilliant colors set them apart from other butterflies and earn them respect wherever they make their home. But, for all the admiration given the resplendent Colorado Hairstreak, his range is quite limited. For the most part, this remarkable creature of the purple wings confines his home to a few western states.
