Howard Koslow: George Henry Thomas George Henry Thomas was born in Southampton County, Virginia in 1816. In 1840, he graduated from West Point and served in the Seminole Indian War in Florida and in the Mexican War. With the Civil War, he was torn between his country and his state. He chose to honor the flag under which he had been fighting. He was commissioned a brigadier general in the Union Army. At Mill Springs, Kentucky, he won his first battle -- a small, but decisive victory -- and was raised to the rank of major general of the volunteer army. But it was at Chickamauga that he won his fame. One of the fiercest battles of the war, Chickamauga had seen some 16,000 Union soldiers and 18,000 Confederates lost. And, looking upon the bloody battlefield, General William Rosecrans -- in command -- ordered his men to retreat. Thomas disobeyed the order. Standing steadfastly against the enemy, Thomas saved the Army of the Cumberland from complete disaster and became known as the "Rock of Chickamauga." Thomas replaced Rosecrans and went on to fight the Battle of Chattanooga, capturing Lookout Mountain. And, in 1864, he marched his men out of Nashville in the Battle of Nashville -- the most complete Union victory of the Civil War.
