Liu Danzhai: A Dream of Red Mansions - Woman in Veil The theme of unrequited love emerges as a main theme of the novel A Dream of Red Mansions, a tragedy whose victim is the sweet and delicate heroine, Lin Daiyu. Her love for Bao-yu, who is destined to be married to another, leads to Daiyu's sorrowful death as she repines and dies of a broken heart. Likewise, the handsome and desirable Bao-yu is driven mad when he is tricked into marrying someone else who had secretly been substituted for his beloved Daiyu in the wedding ceremony. These ill-fated lovers also symbolize the deeper ideologies of the novel as their tragic stories reveal the failings of eighteenth century Chinese life. Amidst the political struggles and vicious intrigues of the Ch'ing Dynasty, the feudal system, with its own inner rivalries and oppressive abuse of the class system, was tottering. Its victims, such as the beautiful and intelligent Lin Daiyu, showed contempt for feudal ethics in their longing for freedom and happiness. This artwork shows Lin Daiyu's realization of her own tragic fate in the withering of flowers.
