Vadim Gorbatov: Black-faced Grassquit An island son who seldom ventures farther north than Florida, the Black-faced Grassquit thrives in tropical climates. Adult males possess velvety black and moss-green plumage, while the females' attire fades to pale gray and olive. Such nondescript colors are a legacy from their sparrow family. Small and finch-like, the Black-faced Grassquit uses its stout, conical beak for crushing and husking seeds. Males pursue females quite vigorously during courtship, chasing them through vegetation and flailing them with their wings. Although the female nests and broods alone, the male helps her feed their insatiable offspring and see them through adolescence. Less ornamental than other tropical species, the Black-faced Grassquit produces a buzzing or slurred call.
