Vadim Gorbatov: Audubon's Shearwater Riding the wind currents more capably than a surfer rides the waves, the Audubon's Shearwater is a solitary fisherman of the open seas. With rapid wing beats alternated by periods of gentle gliding, the Audubon's Shearwater will scan the saltwater in search of prey. It will plunge into the water after small fish, diving shallowly and then resting for long periods upon the rolling waves. Ships are ignored if there is food nearby. A dark brown and white bird with rather unremarkable markings, the Audubon's Shearwater is often confused with other members of its family. The larger Newell's Shearwater and the smaller Little Shearwater are often misidentified as the Audubon's Shearwater. However, the Audubon's has shorter wings and a longer tail than either species, which rarely occupy the same range.
