Gene Jarvis: Cory's Shearwater Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea ater is a summer visitor to the island of Malta. The Cory's Shearwater is the largest and most common of all Shearwaters -- which are related to the Albatross family. It comes to the islands to breed in shoreline colonies, venturing inland only at night during the mating season. In May, female Shearwaters lay a single chalky white egg in a crevice or burrow of a sea-cliff. In Malta the bird is called a Ciefa.
