Gene Jarvis: Pierre, South Dakota
The enthralling history of South Dakota reads like an adventure story of the Old West. It is a tale of stampedes for gold and battles between Indians and settlers. It is the story of such famous people as Wild Bill Hickok, Sitting Bull, Calamity Jane and George Custer. But, of all the glittering personalities who have starred in the South Dakota story, the most important figure of all is the American farmer, who has clung tenaciously to his land through drought, depression and blizzard to make South Dakota one of the nation's great agricultural states. In their Capitol located in Pierre, the people of South Dakota have a stirring monument to their rich heritage and the men and women who built their state. Murals, statues and oil portraits on display throughout the Capitol recall events of yesteryear ... and a beautiful thirty-four acre park surrounding the Capitol provides a pleasant setting for the historic building. Although South Dakota achieved statehood in 1889, the Capitol building wasn't dedicated until 1910. Today, the Capitol looks much as it did then. Marble balustrades, scagliola pillars, stained glass skylights and mosaic floors lavish the rotunda, and graceful mahogany and oak desks add warmth and charm to the Senate and House chambers. In their Capitol in Pierre, the people of the Sunshine State have a resplendent monument to their heritage.
