Dick Davis: The Medieval Fair
So that King William I could know -- and tax -- the farthest reaches of his kingdom, he ordered the first great medieval survey to be taken in 1086. Royal commissioners traveled through the country counting every cottage, castle and farm with such thoroughness that it was compared to Judgment Day, and thus became known as the Domesday Book. One of the most festive and celebrated events recorded in the Domesday Book was the annual fair. People from miles around came to the fair to buy and sell their wares. Fair vendors offered everything from colored cloth, to fresh meat and vegetables. In addition, fair goers enjoyed strolling musicians and the antics of jugglers and jokers.
