Mike Dempsey: Train Wheel -- Transport & Communications This artwork is designed in the form of a nostalgic travel poster of the 1930's -- the heyday of the steam engine as a means of transportation. It focuses on a section of the "Mallard" -- one of the wheels. The "Mallard" is one of the world's most famous steam engines, as it set the world record for steam power on the railways with a speed of 126 mph on July 3, 1938, beating both the British record of 114 mph and the world record of 124.5 mph. This record still stands and is likely to stand for all time. The first steam locomotive to reach a speed of 100 mph was the famous London & North Eastern Railway's "Flying Scotsman" in 1934. The "Mallard," another LNER train, was the product of refinements made to successive generations of engines. Ostensibly, the purpose of the record-breaking run was a braking trial, but Nigel Gresley, LNER's chief mechanical engineer, had other ideas. The "Mallard" is now one of the principal exhibits at the National Railway Museum in York, England.
