Mike Dempsey: Victorian Britain 1850 - 1860 This artwork features an 1846 painting of Queen Victoria by Winterhalter surrounded by, clockwise from top left, the symbol of the Salvation Army, formed in 1865; a picture of Charles Darwin, whose controversial book, Origin of the Species, was published in 1856; a "V" for Victoria; ALfred Lord Tennyson, a favorite poet of Queen Victoria who was made poet laureate in 1850; an "R" representative of the reigning queen; and London's Clock Tower -- containing the famous bell, Big Ben. Built in 1859, the Clock Tower was one of the most potent and influential architectural images of the Victorian period. Also featured is Florence Nightingale, hospital reformer and nurse to victims of the Crimean War of 1865; an illustration by John Tenniel from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, published in 1865; and a design detail from Owen Jones' The Grammar of Ornament, published in 1856 and universally regarded as the classic reference book on Victorian aesthetics.
