David Gentleman: Red Mail Coach, Liverpool and Manchester Railway 1830 The Liverpool and Manchester Railway was important in the field of passenger transport. It also had tremendous impact on the growing British economy. By connecting two large cities, the L&M became the first railroad in the world to form a principal link between important commercial centers. And the link multiplied. In 1845, the L&M joined with the Grand Junction Railway and this pair linked with the Manchester and Birmingham and the London and Birmingham in 1846 to form the great London and North Western Railway. In 1858, the LNWR absorbed the Chester and Holyhead. Several other lines joined the LNWR during the next ten years. The new railway system which, by now, was providing cheap and easy access to all major British industrial centers, funneled much of the freight and passenger traffic into Liverpool for departure to foreign ports. On return trips, the railroad helped distribute raw materials from the docks to factories in commercial centers like Manchester, Birmingham and London. This artwork shows the familiar red Post Office wagon with its guard.
