Alexei Arkipovich Leonov was born May 30, 1934, in Listvyanka, Siberia. After graduating from the Chuguyev Higher Air Force School in Ukraine in 1957, he served as a jet fighter pilot in the German Democratic Republic. He was a student at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy when he was selected for the Soviet Union's original team of cosmonauts in 1960. In 1965, Leonov became the first man to walk in space. Ten years later, he served as commander of the Soyuz spacecraft that would participate in the world's first international space mission, the Soyuz-Apollo Test Project. One hundred forty miles above Earth, the two space vehicles completed their docking on July 17, 1975, and Leonov transmitted that "Apollo and Soyuz are shaking hands now." A short while later, Leonov himself shook hands with Tom Stafford, the American Apollo commander, through the open hatchway connecting spacecraft from two different nations for the first time. Alexei Leonov eventually rose to the rank of Major General in the Soviet Air Force. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he quickly adjusted to the new environment, holding various positions in investment banking including President of the Alfa Kapital Fund.
