Michael Garland: Vance Brand
Vance DeVoe Brand was born May 9, 1931, in Longmont, Colorado. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1953 with a business degree, after which he completed training as a Naval Aviator and flew with the Marine Corps until 1957. Returning to the University of Colorado, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1960. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1963, Brand worked with Lockheed as an experimental test pilot for F-104 programs in the United States and Europe. Brand was one of 19 pilot astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. His first space flight was on the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, in which spacecraft from the United States and the former Soviet Union rendezvoused in orbit and remained docked together for two days. As the Apollo Command Module Pilot, his skill in maneuvering his spacecraft was crucial to the success of the world's first international docking in space. In November 1982, Brand served as commander of STS-5, the first fully operational Space Shuttle mission. He also commanded STS-41B in February 1984, which ended with the first Shuttle landing at the Kennedy Space Center.
