Michael Garland: Sir Richard Branson, Aviation Entrepreneur Richard Branson began his entrepreneurial career by starting a national magazine, Student, while attending school in Buckinghamshire, England. By the early 1970s, he was selling records through his Virgin mail-order company. Branson then established a record shop, a recording studio and the Virgin recording label. Success followed success, and Branson was soon directing a diverse, multi-billion dollar operation encompassing retail stores, publishing, cinema and video, clubs and hotels, bridal fashions and high-speed rail. In 1984, Branson founded Virgin Atlantic Airways. In 1996, he acquired Euro Belgian Airlines and renamed it Virgin Express. Operating Boeing 737 airplanes to destinations throughout Europe, the non-smoking, single-class air service innovated a simplified, low-fare operation in which passengers are issued boarding passes instead of tickets. Today, the Virgin Airship and Balloon Company operates a large number of hot-air balloons and air ships for a wide variety of commercial and promotional uses in over 50 different countries. Possessing a spirit of adventure in addition to a razor-sharp business acumen, Branson engaged in record-setting hot-air balloon flights -- becoming the first person to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On March 30, 2000, Richard Branson was knighted by Queen Elizabeth the Second. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® Richard Bronson Commemorative Cover postmarked April 29, 2000.
