Michael Garland: Madonna and Child The Madonna or Virgin Mary has long been venerated in Western and Eastern Churches as the mother of the Christ child, and has traditionally been a revered subject of art, music and literature as well. Historically the Madonna has been known by different names and terms -- virgin mother, guarantee of the incarnation, second Eve, assumed into heaven, immaculate, ever virgin and Mother of God. She was first prominently featured in church art in 431 A.D. when she was designated with the title Theotokos or "Mother of God." According to Scripture, Christ was the product of a divine and miraculous virgin birth. "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and . . . that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35) "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there will be no end." (Luke 1:32-33) Mary is venerated not only because she bore Christ physically, but because she bore Him spiritually. "And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be an accomplishment of those things which are spoken unto her from the Lord." (Luke 1:35) The Madonna is revered because she was the ark which brought the redeemer of mankind.
