Michael Garland: Classic Cupid The angel featured on this Love stamp first appeared in Raphael's 1513 masterpiece the Sistine Madonna, now in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, Germany. Angels, in various forms, have been closely associated with love for centuries. They are often portrayed as the Roman god of love Cupid's assistants, who unite couples by wounding them with bow and arrow. The modern depiction of an angel likely originated in ancient times. The winged goddess Victoria (Victory), who appears on coins dating back hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, can be easily mistaken for an angel. Angels are well known in Christian religion as God's messengers to humanity. They are also prominent in other religions, including Judaism and Islam. In the latter, the angel Gabriel is said to have revealed the Koran to Mohammed. Nine orders of angels are believed to exist in three distinct groups or "choirs." They are seraphim, cherubim and thrones; dominions, virtues and powers; and principalities, archangels and angels. The angel depicted here is actually believed to represent one of the genii of death. However, these were not evil beings, for they were perceived as protective attendants of people and places. They were typically depicted as children and often referred to as putti -- the Italian word for "kids." This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the U.S. 32¢ Love - Cherub Love Series stamp issued January 20, 1996. Artwork Copyright © 1995 Unicover Corporation.
