Michael Garland: John and William Bartram
Born on March 23, 1699, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, John Bartram is considered the "father of American botany." In 1728, Bartram purchased property on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he built a large stone house and laid out America's first botanical garden. Bartram was soon introduced to London naturalist and fellow Quaker Peter Collinson, who became his patron and mentor. At Collinson's request, Bartram began traveling widely across the continent in search of plants and seeds for the British scientist. Bartram soon established an international reputation as a collector of botanical specimens. Born in 1739, John's son William inherited his father's enthusiasm for plants. In 1765, after the elder Bartram was appointed botanist to King George III, William accompanied his father on a canoe trip up St. Johns River in Florida to collect flora. A talented artist and writer, William kept detailed notes of his many explorations. In 1791, he published Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogules, or Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws. The work was immensely popular in Europe and greatly influenced English Romanticism by inspiring such renowned poets as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Today, the Bartram's famous botanical garden survives as part of the Philadelphia public park system.
