Ron Fletcher: Twelve Meter Yacht/Yachting in Australia The Twelve Meter Yacht is an international class of yacht, approximately 20 meters in length, and a beam size of about 3.8 meters, with sails and a crew of eleven. This high pedigree yacht is especially designed for close match-racing around a triangular course of about 30 nautical miles in length. Racing in this class represents the pinnacle of class match-racing as no handicaps apply and first over the line wins. The Twelve Meter Yacht is of a very technically advanced construction and much of the new technology learned in building them has flowed into design refinements in other yacht classes. Older Twelve Meter Yachts which have been technically outdated are sometimes modified into Ocean Racers.
