Ron Fletcher: Ocean Racer/Yachting in Australia Ocean Racers vary in length from 7 meters to 24 meters with a beam of 3 meters to 6 meters and weighing between 4 tons and 30 tons. The larger yachts are capable of long ocean races, for example, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, events like the Whitbread Around the World Yacht Race which circumnavigates the world, and the famous Admiral's Cup. As Ocean Racers vary in size and performance, they are raced on a handicap system based on their measurements. Sails vary in size and the crews may range from 4 to 22 people. Ocean Racers have a lead keel to maintain the yacht's stability as the crew weight cannot keep them upright.
