The son of an itinerant musical family, Carl Maria von Weber spent his early years in nearly constant travel with his eccentric father. During a period of relative stability in Munich, Weber wrote his first opera Die Macht von Liebe, (The Power of Love) in 1800. Although amateurish, the work portended the composer's brilliance. The turning point in von Weber's roving, turbulent life came following his arrest and banishment from Stuttgart. After this episode, von Weber became seriously concerned with establishing himself as a performer and an artist. His compositions began to show maturity, and his performances were well received by the critics and the public alike. In 1814, while conducting in Prague, von Weber fell in love with Caroline Brandt, a singer in the opera company. They were wed three years later after he had been appointed conductor of German opera in Dresden. Weber's first great operatic composition Der Freischutz (The Freeshooter) succeeded in creating a prototype for the German romantic operatic tradition. It was a blend of folk superstition and sentimentalized medieval history. Other master compositions followed in rapid succession until von Weber's untimely death from tuberculosis in 1826.
