Bart Forbes: Percy Lavon Julian
Julian was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1899 -- just 54 years after the abolition of slavery. It was a time when few black Americans had the resources to attend college, and fewer still were able to pursue graduate degrees. Yet Julian earned his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana's DePauw University, acquired a fellowship to Harvard and was granted a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna. These academic achievements are testaments to his remarkable dedication to scientific research. Through his profound efforts, he filed over 100 patents and formulated chemical procedures which led to the development of oral contraceptives and the drug cortisone. During the 1920s, as an instructor of chemistry, he shared his vast knowledge with scores of fortuitous university students. In 1932, he returned to DePauw, his alma mater, as a research fellow in organic chemistry. Four years later, the business world beckoned. Julian joined the Glidden Company, where his work led to new methods of paint production. And in 1953, his entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of the Julian Laboratories. He later founded the Julian Research Institute which served not only as a place to continue his invaluable pursuits, but also became his legacy to fellow scientists. Julian was the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Spingarn Medal presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for exceptional accomplishments by a black American.
